The supplied curriculum describes an interdisciplinary programme designed for researchers, policy analysts, border administrators and humanitarian practitioners.

Admission concept

  • Bachelor’s degree, minimum Second-Class Honors, Lower Division or equivalent, in a relevant field.
  • Statement of purpose up to 1,000 words.
  • Two academic or professional recommendations.
  • English proficiency.

Year 1 — Foundations & Methods

Semester 1 · 15 CU / 30 ECTS

BRS 5101 — Theories of Borders, Space, and Sovereignty · 3 CU
Intellectual history of border concepts, Westphalian demarcations, post-national, digital and biopolitical borders, African state-making and the African Union Border Programme.
MIG 5102 — Human Mobility, Transnationalism, and Migration Dynamics · 3 CU
Global and regional drivers of voluntary and forced migration; migration theories; transnational identities, diaspora remittances and multi-local households.
BRS 5103 — Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methodologies · 3 CU
Research design, epistemology, ethics, ethnography in conflict-affected zones, survey design, interviewing and participatory methods.
MIG 5104 — GIS and Spatial Analysis for Borderlands · 3 CU
Practical GIS work using QGIS and remote-sensing data to map mobility, trade corridors, ecological degradation, refugee settlements and infrastructure.
BRS 5105 — Regional Integration and Cross-Border Cooperation · 3 CU
Comparative analysis of EU, EAC, ECOWAS and AfCFTA approaches to regional integration and cross-border cooperation.

Semester 2 · 15 CU / 30 ECTS

MIG 5201 — International Migration and Refugee Law · 3 CU
International and regional refugee-law frameworks, human rights, non-refoulement and statelessness, including the Ugandan legal context identified in the supplied curriculum.
BRS 5202 — Borderland Economies, Informal Trade, and Security · 3 CU
Informal cross-border trade, women traders, currency exchange, smuggling, illicit trafficking and border security.
MIG 5203 — Climate Change, Environmental Displacement, and Resource Scarcity · 3 CU
Pastoralist migration, land conflicts and climate-related mobility across the Horn of Africa, Sahel and Nile Basin.
BRS 5204 — Governance of Border Control and Security Management · 3 CU
Integrated border management, identity verification, intelligence sharing and the balance between security and humanitarian responsibilities.
BRS 5205 — Research Colloquium & Proposal Writing · 3 CU
Proposal development, presentation and peer review for the M.A. dissertation.

Six-week field placement at selected border points, refugee settlements or border-governance organizations, producing an empirical field report.

BRS 6402 — Master's Dissertation & Oral Defense · 9 CU

Independent empirical research, a 20,000–25,000-word dissertation and oral defense under academic supervision.

Research essays, GIS projects, policy brief drafts, presentations and seminar participation.

60% Written Examinations

End-of-semester written assessments evaluating analytical and conceptual mastery.
